And although there were reams of speculation about who had gotten Marcy pregnant, nobody ever seriously suspected it might be Paul. The others never learned about Marcy and Paul’s secret morning of passion, back at the cabin. Yet even as their meetings became uncomfortable and clumsy, they were always able to conceal the tension between them from their friends. It was so hard to pretend that they were practical strangers, with that enormous bulge making it so obvious that they shared a very personal connection. Marcy would become especially conscious of the fact that this man standing before her had fathered the baby she was now carrying. Paul struggled not to stare at Marcy’s beautiful belly. They would politely acknowledge one another and maintain their agreed-upon charade that nothing had happened.īut as the weeks turned in to months and Marcy’s belly grew larger and larger, these casual meetings became much more difficult. Occasionally, Marcy and Paul would accidentally bump in to one another around town. ![]() After many days of thorough consideration, Paul reluctantly agreed to Marcy’s terms - with the non-negotiable proviso that, if she ever needed help, she would call him. But Marcy had always been a very headstrong and persuasive girl. Paul wasn’t comfortable at all with that proposal. Marcy gently urged Paul to step back, and allow her to raise their son or daughter by herself. Their child would be growing up in a broken family, split between two distant parents that didn’t love one another. Having a mommy that lived in one home and a daddy that lived in another shared many of the same concerns Marcy had about the loveless marriage. She didn’t like the idea of sharing custody much better. A household that was almost certain to crumble in to divorce, sooner rather than later. A household built on pretense and insincerity. She didn’t want to bring up a baby in a household with two parents who didn’t genuinely love one another. If they did settle down into a relationship or marriage, they would always know that the only reason they were together was the baby, not because they loved one another. ![]() He immediately offered to do the honorable thing and settle down with her, but after a lengthy, thoughtful discussion, Marcy politely declined.ĭespite their strong sexual attraction, they both acknowledged that they had no romantic feelings for one another. But even so, hearing the news shook him to his core. Paul had been concerned about this possibility ever since that day at the cabin. More weeks passed, until one day, Marcy approached Paul with a solemn look on her face. Apparently, it was so inconsequential that it didn’t warrant any discussion. That, in itself, was a message about their sexual affair. Days turned into weeks, and the serious follow-up conversation, that Paul just assumed that he and Marcy were bound to have, never actually occurred.
